A. LÝ THUYẾT

Mệnh đề trạng ngữ là mệnh đề phụ có chức năng ngữ pháp của một trạng ngữ. Nó bổ nghĩa cho mệnh đề chính và thường trả lời các câu hỏi:

When? (khi nào?) – Where? (ở đâu?) – Why? (tại sao?) – How? (như thế nào?) – Under what condition? (với điều kiện nào?)

I. MỆNH ĐỀ TRẠNG NGỮ CHỈ MỤC ĐÍCH (Adverbial Clauses of Purpose)

1. so that / in order that (để ...)

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

- He left early so that he wouldn’t get stuck in traffic.

- We whispered in order that we wouldn’t wake the baby.

* Rút gọn mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ mục đích:

a. to / so as to / in order (for sb) to + V

Ví dụ:

- She saved money so that she could buy a new car.

→ She saved money to buy a new car.

- She borrowed a dictionary in order that she could translate the document.

→ She borrowed a dictionary so as to translate the document.

- We moved to the city so that our children could attend a better school.

→ We moved to the city in order for our children to attend a better school.

b. for + N/V-ing

Ví dụ:

- She downloaded the app in order that she could listen to music offline.

→ She downloaded the app for listening to music offline.

c. with a view to / with the aim of + V-ing

Ví dụ:

- He joined the debate club so that he could improve his public speaking skills.

→ He joined the debate club with a view to improving his public speaking skills.

- She started her own business in order that she would gain independence.

→ She started her own business with the aim of gaining independence.

2. lest / for fear that (để không...)

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

- He wore sunglasses lest the bright light should hurt his eyes.

- She stayed silent for fear that she might say something wrong.

* Rút gọn mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ mục đích lest/for fear that:

Ví dụ:

- He avoided discussing the topic lest it would cause an argument.

→ He avoided discussing the topic for fear of causing an argument.

- They parked far from the entrance for fear that the car alarm might go off.

→ They parked far from the entrance for fear of the car alarm going off.

II. MỆNH ĐỀ TRẠNG NGỮ CHỈ KẾT QUẢ (Adverbial Clauses of Result)

1. so + adj/adv + that

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

- The road was so slippery that several cars skidded.

- She smiled so warmly that everyone felt welcome.

2. such (+ a/an) + adj + N + that

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

- It was such a peaceful village that we didn’t want to leave.

- She is such an intelligent student that she always gets good marks.

3. so + adj + a/an + N (số ít) + that

Cấu trúc:

 

Ví dụ:

- It was so challenging a task that few people attempted it.

- He is so talented a musician that audiences adore him.

4. so + much/many/little/few + N + that

Cấu trúc:

Chú ý:

- many/few + N (đếm được số nhiều)

- much/little + N (không đếm được)

Ví dụ:

- She has so much patience that she can teach even the most difficult students.

- There were so many people that we couldn't find a seat in the restaurant.

- They had so little time that they could only visit one attraction.

- We received so few applications that we had to extend the deadline. 

* Rút gọn mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ kết quả:

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

- The exam was so difficult that many students failed.

→ The exam was too difficult for many students to pass.

- He spoke so quickly that we couldn’t understand.

→ He spoke too quickly for us to understand. 

III. MỆNH ĐỀ TRẠNG NGỮ CHỈ NGUYÊN NHÂN/LÝ DO (Adverbial Clauses of Reason)

1. because / as / since

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

- Because the road was blocked, we took a different route.

- As it's getting late, we should probably head home.

- Since he was the only witness, the police questioned him carefully.

2. seeing (that) / now (that)

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

- Seeing that no one volunteered, she took the lead.

- Now that the weather is nice, we can go for a walk in the park.

* Rút gọn mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ nguyên nhân/ lý do

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

- She got a promotion because she performed exceptionally well.

→ She got a promotion because of her exceptional performance.

→ She got a promotion because of the fact that she performed exceptionally well.

- The game was canceled because the weather was bad.

→ The game was canceled due to the bad weather.

→ The game was canceled due to the fact that the weather was bad.

IV. MỆNH ĐỀ TRẠNG NGỮ CHỈ TƯƠNG PHẢN/NHƯỢNG BỘ (Adverbial Clauses of Concession)

1. although/though/even though

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

- Although he was inexperienced, he handled the situation well.

- Though it was late, the streets were still full of people.

- Even though they disagreed, they remained friends. 

* Rút gọn mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ nhượng bộ:

a. in spite of / despite / regardless of +N/Ving

Ví dụ:

- Although she was injured, she continued to play.

→ In spite of/Despite/ Regardless of her injury, she continued to play.

→ In spite of the fact that/Despite the fact that she was injured, she continued to play.

b. although + adj/prep phr
