Chia số ít / nhiều: Nếu là danh từ đếm được số nhiều.

Chia số ít: Nếu là danh từ không đếm được.

Chủ ngữ là danh từ tập hợp chỉ một tổ chức / nhóm:

(team, family, class, government, audience, staff, jury, committee, …)

Chia số ít: Nếu coi cả nhóm là 1 thể thống nhất (tất cả cùng làm một việc).

Chia số nhiều: Nếu muốn nhấn mạnh hành động riêng rẽ của từng thành viên.

My family is moving to a new house. (Cả nhà cùng đi).

My family are all arguing about where to go for dinner. (Mỗi người một ý kiến riêng).
